Immigration unit and community
Our unit will be on Immigration. During the unit students will learn the push-pull factors of why people immigrate. The unit would start off and explore colonial immigration. The middle of the the unit would be centered around the Irish and Chinese immigration during the construction of the Transcontinental railroad. At the end of the unit we will focus on current issues involving immigration. Involving the community in this unit will be exciting. I will create an assignment where students will have to interview someone who immigrated to this country and find out why they decided to come to America and live in the town they are in. I would want them to learn about the struggles they faced in their own country as well as America. After the interview I would want them to compare and contrast their findings with the immigrant accounts from any of the historical era's we studied in class. This would be a oral presentation and I would encourage them to ask the person they interviewed to come into class and perhaps speak directly to the students.

I like the idea of a comparison of two different immigrant accounts. I'm looking forward to hearing more.
ReplyDeleteI like how your unit has a connection to current issues today. I think the students would find it more interesting because it's more relevant to their lives today.
ReplyDeleteI think that your idea for involving the community is really cool and different. I think that students would be really excited to do this and have a lot of fun getting to interview someone about their life.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of melding past immigrant experiences with present ones. It really helps students make that connection between historical and current events. Maybe students could arrange for the people they interview to come to class with stories of their experiences so that everyone can develop a fuller picture of how immigration effects millions of people.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea you have about comparing two immigrant groups. Many comparisons can be made including work experience and discrimination. Legislation preventing immigration also took place with the Irish and as we are currently seeing with immigrants from Latin America.
ReplyDeleteI did a unit last semester on immigration. It worked out really and it's a fairly easy theme to include different subjects on. You should definitely try to involve the community by getting an immigrant to share a first hand account of his/her experiences. It's a great way to show the students a living example of content learned in class... also I plan to do the same thing in my lesson.
